Colgate University Raiders
Coach Murphy built an impressive 31-18 record (632) in his first two seasons at the helm of the Raiders, and has compiled a Patriot League record in each of his last two years. Coach Matt Langel is now head coach at UMass-Amherst and a four-time NCAA tournament participant (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015).
Seven different Raiders were also named Patriot League player of the month during his time as head coach. Coach Mike Murphy has also led the Raiders to three Patriot League titles (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015) and two NCAA tournament wins.
In 1990, when they entered the NCAA tournament as runners-up, and the following year, the Raiders reached the Final Four.
Despite the fact that two older NHL draft picks anchored their blue line, the Raiders landed in last place in the ECAC and were swept by St. Lawrence, ending their run with a narrow 64-61 win over the Boston University Terriers, which took the team to the finals of the Patriot League Tournament. The Raiders have earned their way into the quarterfinals of the ECAC tournament, but the OT winner has won a best-of-three series against Brown University. On March 4, 1990, both teams gathered to watch Union College's last regular-season game against Yale University, with the winner of that game deciding who they would face in the next round.
The Raiders may one day play at the Dome again, but the significance of this game won't be what it could have been. Army and Navy were the only Patriot League teams to play in a game outside the conference, and both played against the Black Knights, who went into the game 4-1. Had the Raiders won the regular-season title and received an automatic bid, they would have had to settle for either the National Invitational Tournament or the NIT.
The venue for both programs is a landmark in the history of college football in New York State. The Raiders-Black Knights game, the second regular-season game in the Patriot League, was played at Andy Kerr Stadium, located on the campus of Colgate University.
Meanwhile, the hockey program plays in the Eastern College Athletics Conference, and the arena is home to New York State's men's and women's hockey teams. The Colgate University Pep Band consists of about 20-25 members who play at just about every collegate sports event and, like the men's team, occasionally travel to other colleges and universities in New England and other parts of the country.
Tyler "Tyson" Spink has played for the Raiders since 2011 and helped the program to the NCAA tournament in 2014. The Raiders were joined by former Colgate basketball players Dave D'Agostino and Chris Gossett, as well as former football player and current assistant coach Mike O'Brien.
Pennington joined Colgate in 2006-07 and immediately pushed the team to the .500 mark. The Raiders beat Binghamton and George Mason, beat Lehigh and Bucknell and were part of a 7-1 home mark underscored by a victory over Penn State in the first round of the 2012 NCAA tournament.
The Colgate women go 8-11 this season, including a 1-7 record at home and a 2-6 mark on the road, with a 3-4 record in conference play.
The Raiders have won 68 games each of the past three seasons and won the Patriot League title two years ago. The big moment for the Raiders this year was their five-game winning streak, which included two seasons. That strong play helped them win the regular season and a three-game Patriots League Tournament last winter.
Individually, Gensburg became only the third player in Colgate's history to win the First Team - Team All - Patriot League First Team award in four seasons. He joined Muir as the player to score three goals in a single three-match run - Rivers Classic tournament. The Raiders (12-2-1, 5-0-3 Patriot League) have won four consecutive Patriot League titles dating back to 1936, the first since World War II.
The first men's team reached 2014, when three Raiders were named to the All-League team. Starr remembers turning a weak club program into one of the strongest programs in the country at the time. He led Colgate to its third title in four seasons and second in three years. Milbury may not be in Colate's record books, but he has been a fixture on the blue line for three seasons.
Pennington was a member of the USA Soccer team during his student days as an athlete The program for the development of the men's national team. The Raiders will be their first opponent when Syracuse breaks the seal on the renovated building on September 19.
Colgate players and fans have struggled through a historic season and playoff run that was shortened to end on March 11. The announcement sparked a deep sense of agony shared by the athletic department, students, athletes and campus.
